January surprise

Out the front door
down the walk halfway
hidden under dried, insect-bitten
iris husks
a handful of green
pops yellow petals
promising spring.
Primrose.

I'll say. Alas, no such January surprise in Central Washington. Each morning we walk out our back door onto a sheet of ice, compliments freezing and thawing and living in somewhat of a cold spot in the Yakima Valley.
